The recent outbreak has let to scarcity of cleaning and essentials items, one of them is the hand sanitiser. But don't worry; it's surprisingly easy to make your hand sanitizer at home. You've just got be careful not to mess things up. All you need to do is to make sure that you thoroughly sterilise all the equipment you use for mixing; otherwise, you might contaminate the entire thing.
We got two recipes: one is a gel-based sanitiser and the other one is the suggested by WHO itself
For Gel Based
Ingredients Required
- 3/4 cup Isopropyl also known as rubbing alcohol (99%) - This can be easily bought from any chemist store.
- 1/4 cup of Aloe Vera gel, since the rubbing alcohol is a bit harsh so to reduce the harshness of alcohol you need to add this gel. One can easily find this in any health or beauty stores. Some people even grow this in their garden.
- Your favourite essential oil for some good fragrance. You can also use lemon or even lavender, or tea tree oil as an alternative.
- A spray bottle or a liquid bottle dispenser.
Procedure
- Add all ingredients into a bowl and mix or beat with a whisk to prepare a homogeneous mixture.
- Sanitise your spray bottles with some leftover alcohol and let them sit until the alcohol is evaporated.
- Lastly, pour the gel into the bottle and mark it as "hand sanitiser."
For Better Quality (WHO recommended formulation)
Ingredients Required
- One cup of isopropyl alcohol (99%)
- One tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide (3%)
- Two teaspoons of glycerine
- 1/4 cup of distilled or boiled cold water
Procedure
- First mix the alcohol and glycerine. Here glycerine is used to prevent the alcohol from drying your hands.
- Add in one tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide and distilled or boiled (and cooled) water. If you are using a lower alcohol concentration solution, then add less water; since there must be least 3⁄4 of alcohol in the final mixture.
- Pour the solution into the bottles, and they are ready to be used. Please note that the consistency of this will be in liquid like state so you can get these on the paper towel and use that as wipes.
These are a few DIYs that you can easily try at home. But it’s important to know that rubbing sanitiser will never be a replacement to good old handwashing. You should be using these sanitisers at times when handwashing isn’t possible because the most effective way to defend yourself from infectious diseases is soap, water, and a thorough wash.
