How to Clean Shower Curtains at Home

July 15, 2020
In the bathroom, the one thing that gets dirtier every day is the shower curtain. They not only accumulate dust and soap scum over time but the heat and moisture produce conditions that allow mould and mildew to thrive.

If you found mildew on your shower curtain — whether it's plastic or cloth — does not worry. Use these tips to clean the shower curtains, so you can bathe in comfort.

Read the Care Label

The first and the most important step before starting the laundry process are to read the care label. The label will give you a clear picture of how to clean the shower curtains. From here one can understand the fabric type, washing type, correct water temperature. If the curtains require specific types of cleaning, then visit the laundry & dry cleaning services near you.

Washing Techniques

Wash Types depends on the curtain’s fabric type. But in most cases, the curtains can either be hand washed or machine washed. While washing you can use ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and bleach as the stain remover.

Hand Wash

For the hand wash, take a damp, clean microfiber fabric. Sprinkle baking soda over the fabric so the cloth is coated in a thin layer of baking soda. Use this cloth to scrub the surface of the curtain. Initially give a light scrub then focus on mere removal of basic grime and dirt. After scrubbing, rinse it with warm water, and check if any traces of baking soda is left. Rinse again until the curtain is clear. This process also leaves the bathroom with a clean, fresh fragrance.

Machine Wash

You can also machine to wash your curtains. To start with, remove the curtains from the rod. Make sure you remove the rings that may be on the shower curtains before placing them in your washing machine. Fill your washing machine with warm water on the largest load setting. Then add your regular laundry detergent along with some vinegar, baking powder, or bleach (only if the curtains are white). Toss your shower curtains on a gentle rinse cycle.

Plus, you can place one or two towels into the washing machine. It will prevent the curtains from wrinkling and sticking to each other. The towels you use should be clean.

Dry the Curtains

Once the washing is done, the next step will be drying the shower curtains. You can either tumble to dry, or air dries the curtains depending upon the fabric. Most curtains can be tumble-dried on medium to moderate heat. In case of plastic curtains, hang it back on the rod to air dry.

Clean Curtain Rings too

It is significant to clean the curtain rings because they are constantly exposed to moisture and warmth and led to the build-up of mould. To clean the rings, first, fill a washbasin with warm water and add a cup of white vinegar. Soak the rings in the wash while the curtain is in. Then drain and rinse with hot water. You can clear any stubborn soap scum residue with a brush or even your fingernails.

Maintaining curtain showers is equally important when it comes to preventing mildew. So a temporary fix is to mix a solution of half water and half vinegar and spray it on to the shower curtain every day.

Top 4 Plant based Clothing You should know about

November 22, 2019
Plant based fabrics are nowadays gaining immense popularity with the recent rise of ‘vegan-ism’ and  increasing awareness on animal cruelty in leather goods production and environmental concerns associated for synthetic fibres creation. Also these fabrics are said to be a perfect combination of soft and sustainable fabrics. Here we are putting up a list of eco-friendly plant-derived options which can be used by anyone:

1. Cotton

Extracted from the cotton plant, cotton is one of the textile industry's common fibres. The clothes made of it are resilient and at the same time it have a nice drape; therefore it is known to be one of the best fibres. The other advantage is that they are easier to clean, dry quickly and are soft in touch. The only issue you-might face with this fabric is that it creases easily and thus requires daily ironing. Types of fabrics made out of cotton are terrycloth for bath towels & robes, denim for blue jeans etc.

2. Linen

You probably will be familiar with the flaxseeds due to its health benefits, but there is textile that is made from the reeds of the flax plants which is called linen. Fabrics made of linen have same properties as that of cotton. It is also dries out easily and is durable. However, it is stiffer and also cooler than cotton. It also gets wrinkled easily so requires ironing. Linen material is typically used in the manufacturing of summer clothing, home linen and industrial products.

3. Jute

Jute is one of the most inexpensive natural fibres, and only second to cotton in the quantity and variety of uses created. It is extracted from the jute plant and is referred as golden fibre because of its golden shine. Due to its high strength, it is commonly used as a packaging material. Jute is often combined with other fabrics or used separately in the production of clothing. It has been used for making twine rope and matting.

4. Bamboo

Bamboo fibre is a new phenomenon, as there is the use of technology for turning bamboo into viscose rayon produced by dissolving the bamboo cellulose and then extruded to form fibres. The fabric is extremely soft, absorbs more water than cotton and very breathable as well. It is also a green asset to the environment as it is one of the fastest growing plants in the world and when cut, it regenerates very quickly. These fibres are used in making towels and bathrobes.
